Assignment 13A- Reading Reflection No. 1
I picked the reading called “The Wright Brothers” by David McCullough.
What surprised you the most?
- Growing up my family spent so much time is the Outer Banks in North Carolina which is where the Wright Brothers lived and invented everything. At the beach, specifically in Kitty Hawk, there is a Wright Brothers’ Museum which paints the picture of how the airplane was created. However, compared to the museum the book paints a much different picture. I never realized how long and how much work it took for the brothers to actually create the flyer. In the museum, they have several of their earlier models of the flyer however they have like two or three and they make creating the plane seem like it took two weeks where in reality it took so much longer. My childhood dreams were sort of smashed because I thought creating the flyer was so much easier than it really was.
What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
- I think I really admire their creativity and just how innovative they actually were. Looking back, airplanes have always just been a part of my life however I never took the time to think who actually made such a crazy invention. The Wright Brothers were born smart and most importantly they were born curious, never having a formal education but creating the flyer is really amazing.
What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
- While I found it really hard to actually pick out something I did not really like about the brothers I would have to say over the years I did not really liked how competitive they are painted to be by some historians. While the two brothers worked together on everything they were both trying to outdo one another sometimes when it came to their inventions which only bothers me because I could never imagine being like that with my siblings.
Did the entrepreneurs encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
- The Wright Brothers constantly faced adversity just think about how crazy their idea was for that time. They faced adversity with constantly working hard and trying do ideas instead of trying to continue old ways. They faced adversity in terms of financial need, outside viewpoints, and much more.
What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
- The Wright Brothers were very successful due to their natural ingenuity, their attention to detail, and their drive. They were able to succeed because they had natural gifts and most importantly they made sure to work through anything no matter what the situation was.
Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
- I was confused on why the Wright Brothers never reached out to anyone for help. They were trying to create such a large invention and had so many hardships but seemed almost too prideful to reach out.
If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
- If I had the opportunity to ask the Wright Brothers’ two questions they would be “Did you each have something that you specialized in or did you constantly working together?” I have always been curious to see if each brother had something they were good at whether that be aviation or construction. My other question would be “Do you think being isolated was a good thing or a bad thing?” The brothers were fairly isolated in such a small town and never really asked for help so I wonder if they actually helped them succeed.
For fun: what do you think of the entrepreneur’s opinion of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
- I think that the Wright Brothers were very dedicated but I think they there constant pushing of one another to work harder and harder was almost their demise. I agree with their opinion to an extent but for the most part I do not.
1.) Overall I think your post is great as always.
ReplyDelete2.) Specifically i liked how you added your personal touch to the post and related it to you and your family. I also liked the questions you provided, I think they would pose interesting responses.
3.) I think your responses were a little short and not in depth as your post usually is. I think you could have provided more detail in your answers.
Charles, I really liked your post. Your questions to the entrepreneurs intrigued me the most. It’s slightly different working with a team, especially when having to build something. Do did what? Who contribute to what part of the project? Who even began with the idea to create a flyer? All this questions do come up. I would just give a little more background information about the brothers about their accomplishments and early goals to make the story more clear.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you have presented the autobiography review. It is simple to follow however, it would be more interesting with more detail to the responses. Sometimes I would like to understand if the brothers approached the flyre program as an entrepreneurial project or a science project that would grow into a business.
